About this school readiness test

This free school readiness test helps you understand whether your child is ready for the early years of school. It is not an exam, and it does not check whether your child knows letters, numbers or colours.

What it looks at instead are the everyday capacities a young child grows into, quietly and in their own time, long before any formal learning begins. A child who can settle after an upset, play alongside another child and put their own shoes on is telling you far more about readiness than a child who can recite the alphabet.

The assessment tool takes about five minutes. You answer twenty one short questions about behaviours you already notice at home, and you receive a result straight away along with a PDF report you may keep or share.

The six areas this readiness assessment considers

Emotional readiness

Settling after an upset, managing separation, and expressing feelings in ways you understand.

Social readiness

Playing alongside other children, taking turns, and noticing when another child is upset.

Physical readiness

Moving confidently when running, climbing and balancing, and using the hands for small tasks.

Self-care and independence

Eating, dressing, toileting and tidying with a growing willingness to do things alone.

Language and communication

Expressing needs, following a simple instruction, and listening to a story with interest.

Imaginative and sensory readiness

Pretend play, staying with an activity, and a sense of wonder about the natural world.

Who this school readiness test is for

The test is written for the years when these capacities begin to take shape.

Under 2.5 years There is nothing yet to assess, and the tool will say so gently rather than proceed.
2.5 to 6 years The years this reflection was written for.
Over 6 years You may still continue, though several questions will feel less relevant.

What you receive at the end

  • A clear sense of whether this is a good time to begin looking at schools.
  • A chart showing how your child is growing across all six areas.
  • A short note for each area, written to be read rather than scored.
  • Gentle suggestions for supporting whatever is still unfolding.
  • The whole readiness report as a PDF you can download and keep.

Your answers stay on your own device. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere unless you choose to share your contact details with us.

At Thraya we hold that readiness is nurtured through rhythm, warmth and unhurried days rather than through pressure. Every child unfolds in their own time, and a child who is not yet ready is not behind.

This reflection is offered as a gentle guide for parents and is not a clinical or diagnostic assessment. The way it accounts for a child's age is a fair estimate rather than a formally validated measure. If you have a persistent concern about your child's development, a conversation with your paediatrician or a qualified professional is the right next step.
