In most schools across India, the age criteria for admission follows a similar pattern of — Nursery at 3 years, LKG at 4 years, UKG at 5 years, and Class 1 at 6 years, counted according to the school’s cut-off date.
While the age pattern may look straightforward, confusion often arises because cut-off dates differ across schools and States. A child who is “4+” in one school may not meet the eligibility criteria in another, depending on how the date is calculated. What the Policy Framework Says
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 guarantees schooling for children aged 6 to 14. This makes 6 years the formal entry age for Class 1 under the law.
This is also reinforced by the more recent National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that brings Early Childhood Care and Education into the formal structure from age 3 and notes that Class 1 begins at age 6 in the 5+3+3+4 structure. Furthermore, the NCF-FS 2022 framework from NCERT similarly places Grade 1 at age 6 within this design.
In simple terms, the national structure recognises pre-primary education from age 3, while keeping Class 1 at age 6 as the formal beginning of compulsory schooling.
